유럽축구의 역사
현재 스포츠 축구계의 엘도라도는 잉글랜드 프리미어리그”라는 평가가 있다. 황금빛 무대로 각광받던 리그는 한 세기를 훌쩍 넘긴 유럽 축구사에 늘 존재해왔고, 늘 변화 해왔다. 그 황금빛은 시대와 자본의 흐름을 타고 지금도 유럽 전역을 오간다. 그 찬란한 빛은 어디서 왔고, 어떻게 움직이고 있나?
현재 스포츠 프리미어리그 중견 클럽이자 역사상 단 한 번도 강등당한 경험이 없는 위대한 역사를 자랑하는 아스톤 빌라는 잉글랜드 클럽축구의 산파 역할을 했다. 1885년 당시 아스톤 빌라 구단주였던 윌리엄 맥그리거는 FA(잉글랜드축구협회)가 아마추어 스포츠 선수들에게만 문호를 열었던 축구 경기의 문호를 프로 스포츠 선수들에게도 개방하자, 1년 후 블랙번 로버스, 볼턴 원더러스, 프레스턴 노스 엔드, 웨스트 브로미치 앨비언, 스토크 시티와 연대해 최초의 근대적 프로축구 리그라 할 수 있는 잉글랜드 풋볼 리그(프리미어리그의 전신)를 출범시켰다.
스포츠 프리미어 리그는 2000년 5위였던 UEFA 랭킹을 2001년 프랑스 리그앙과 독일 분데스리가를 제치면서 3위로 끌어올리며 반등에 성공했고, 그 후 2005년 세리에 A를 제치고 리그 랭킹 2위를 차지했으며, 2008년 시즌부터 스페인 프리메라 리가마저 제치고 유럽 최고의 스포츠 리그로 우뚝 선다.
현재 프리미어 리그에서 현역으로 활동중인 한국인은 손흥민과 황희찬, 김지수이다. 손흥민은 2015-16시즌 토트넘에 합류하여 오랜 기간동안 팀의 핵심으로 중용되었고, 2023-24 시즌 시작 전 팀의 주장으로 임명되는 명예를 누렸다. 황희찬 또한 2023-24 시즌 커리어 하이를 달성하고 구단과의 재계약을 체결하여 울버햄튼의 최고 에이스로써 발돋움했다. 한편 브렌트포드의 센터백 유망주 자원으로써 PL에 입성한 김지수는 2024년 6월 7일부로 1군에 데뷔함으로써 프리미어리그에 정식으로 합류하게 되었다.
